Our site is for those who live in Ross Township, are originally from here, or just want to get to know our area better. We are not an official portal but rather a friendly guide from locals for locals. Here we talk about life in our township, sharing stories, events, tips for new neighbors, and useful information about what’s happening close to home.

About Us

Ross Township is one of eleven townships in Lake County, Indiana. It was founded way back in 1848 and was named in honor of William Ross, one of the first settlers. Much has changed since then. While in 1890, we had only 1,427 residents, according to the 2020 census, the population has grown to nearly 49,000! Looking at these figures, you realize how actively our district has developed over the past hundred years. Particularly rapid growth came in the mid-twentieth century when the number of residents nearly doubled each decade.

Our Township is spread over 49 square miles. Most of it is land and only about 0.08% water, but there are scenic areas like Hidden Lake Park where families can enjoy a weekend getaway. Within Ross Township is the city of Merrillville, the largest population center in our area and the true business and cultural core of the area. The Township of Hobart is partially within our boundaries.

How Our Township Lives Today

Ross Township is a place where urban vibrancy and the coziness of a small community come together perfectly. We are bustling with life year-round with local festivals, sporting events, fairs, and family celebrations. On our website, you’ll find event announcements, helpful hints, stories of our residents and reviews of interesting places to go out and about.

For example, we tell you about Hidden Lake Park, a green oasis right in the center of Merrillville. Or we share our impressions of the Independence Day celebration, which attracts more visitors each year for colorful fireworks displays and family picnics.

Learning and Education in Ross Township

Education is a source of pride for us. Ross Township is served by the Merrillville Community School Corporation, which includes Merrillville High School. In addition, we also have the private Andrean High School with a rich history and a strong academic program. This means families with children always have choices, and our schools are actively involved in the community with open events and sports tournaments.
